Ingredients:
1 package of dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/8 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup buttermilk
Directions:
First, disolve the yeast in the warm water and set aside. Next mix all of the dry ingredients together ( in the order in which they are given). Cut the shortening into the dry mixture as you would for a pie dough. Stir in the buttermilk and yeast mixture. Blend thoroughly and the dough is ready to refrigerate or you can knead it lightly and roll it out on a floured board, cutting out the biscuits with a biscuit cutter. If you do not refrigerate the dough first, you will need to let it set at room temperature a little longer for it to rise.
Place the biscuits in a greased pan and let the dough rise slightly before baking them at 400F for about 12 to 15 minutes.
